Penny is on a one-year deal worth $5.75 million, making him the 17th-highest-paid running back by average annual salary, just above his backfield mate Carson at $5.2 million. And although the Seahawks have what Carroll feels is a dynamic tandem in Carson and Penny, there is reason to believe Seattle’s scouting staff will take a hard look at running backs come draft weekend. The draft is another window into this discussion. Running backs rarely reset the market when they sign with new teams and the ones who do get paid end up re-signing with their current franchise. The “running back by committee” approach is becoming more common.
A running back hasn’t been selected in the top half of the draft since Saquon Barkley in 2018 and the general manager who made that pick was largely ridiculed for the decision. Had Seattle owned more than three picks in the 2021 draft, it may have grabbed another running back last offseason.

The Seahawks took a pair of running backs in the next two drafts, opting for depth since they already had a strong pairing in Penny and Chris Carson. The Seahawks were awful at running the football the next two years - 27th in EPA per play on rushes, according to TruMedia - then Seattle used a first-round pick on Rashaad Penny in 2018. In the wake of Marshawn Lynch’s retirement, Seattle in 2016 drafted CJ Prosise, Alex Collins and Zac Brooks. Seattle in the past has drafted running backs as a reactionary measure. That means it is entirely plausible the Seahawks select a tailback in the 2022 NFL Draft.
